In summer we set the MS Johannes Brahms on the exceptionally beautiful
route from Berlin to Stralsund by way of Havel, Oder, Haffs and
Bodden to the Island of Ruegen. This is another route I developed
as a pioneer project with the former MS Ruegen (now MS Polonaise)
to the delight of many customers.
The resorts along the Baltic coast are
deservedly known as the “Royal” resorts.
Berlin’s high society loved the fresh summer breezes and the
sandy beaches of Usedom and Rügen. It is a fact that Usedom
has the highest number of sunny days in the whole of Germany. The
boarding houses and hotels with their typical architecture have been
restored to their original glamour. The attractive landscapes, such
as the chalk cliffs on Rügen, the heathland of the car-free
island of Hiddensee and the National Park on the River Oder are all
much admired by nature-lovers. There are also the historical Hanseatic
cities of Stralsund and Greifswald, which invite the guest to explore
with a gentle stroll through town.
Stralsund – Berlin
Day 1 Travel to Berlin
Individual travel to Berlin and transfer to the MS Johannes Brahms.
Embarkation and Dinner.
Day 2 Berlin
A morning coach * tour through the capital, visiting the Kurfürstendamm
with its elegant shops, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag (Parliament),
the world famous boulevard Unter den Linden and the Potsdamer Platz.
It is certainly true that Berlin is worth a visit! During the afternoon
enjoy our cruise across Lake Tegel, heading north-east.
Day 3 Niederfinow (-Chorin) – Schwedt – Szczecin
Our vessel is lowered 36 metres (120 ft) in the giant navigation
lift at Niederfinow. Our subsequesnt tour * allows you a good
look at this feature and at the ruined monastery in Chorin. We
rejoin the ship in Schwedt and then cruise on to Szczecin through
the National Park on the German-Polish border with its huge reedbeds
and the many species of bird.
Day 4 Szczecin – Wolgast
This morning we offer a coach tour * of Szczecin. This Polish city
looks back on a turbulent history. We visit the magnificent Terrace,
high above the Oder and the castle of the princes of Pommerania.
The cityscape is dominated by huge round squares, broad avenues
and long lines of houses built in the industrial period after
1871. Spend a restful afternoon on board as we cruise across
the Oder lagoon. This evening we offer a walking tour * through
Wolgast.
Day 5 Wolgast – Peenemünde – Greifswald
Today’s coach tour * takes you to the seaside resorts on
the island of Usedom, known locally as “Berlin’s bathtub”.
Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf have been lovingly restored. We return
to the ship in Peenemünde and cruise on to Greifswald, with
its many smart, thatched houses. This afternoon we have a walking
tour * through Greifswald, which escaped the ravages of World War
Two.
Day 6 Greifswald – Lauterbach – Vitte
We cross the inland sea called the Greifswalder Bodden and tie
up in Lauterbach on the island of Rügen. Here we join a
coach tour * to the well-known resorts along the south east coast
of the island. We rejoin the ship to cruise through the Sound
and the Boddeen to Vitte on the island of Hiddensee. This evening
we offer a ride in a horsedrawn coach * through this car-free
island.
Day 7 Vitte – Ralswiek – Stralsund
In the early morning we sail across to the neighbouring island
of Rügen, where there is a coach tour * to the famous chalk
cliffs. During the afternoon we sail to Stralsund and perhaps
enjoy a walking tour * through the city.
Day 8 Stralsund
Disembark after breakfast. Individual journey home.
The excursions marked * are part of a package and can be booked
in advance.
Stralsund – Berlin
This cruise can be booked
in the reverse direction, with only minor adjustments to the itinerary.
The overnight stop and walking tour take place in Ueckermünde,
rather than Wolgast.
We reserve the right to alter this itinerary should conditions dictate.
