Oder – pure Nature
The river landscape of the Oder is uniquely beautiful. Flowering fields and
meadows, forests and moorland form this region of boundless varieties of
animal and plant life. Over 120 species of birds, including the threatened
with extinction great reed-warblers and corncrakes breed in the national
park “Lower
Valley of the Oder”.
Lock of Niederfinow
The lock on the edge of the Oder marsh, built between 1927 and
1934, is a unique technical monument. From early on, there were
attempts to overcome the height difference of 36 meters between
the rivers Havel and Oder. A 157m long bridge connects the locks
with the canal.
Haff and Bodden and Usedom
An enjoyable boat trip takes us over coastal inlets (Haffs) and
lakes (Bodden) to Usedom, an island famous for its healthy sea
air and its kilometre long and fine sand beaches.
Forests, swamps and inlets overgrown with reeds as well as the
800 km2 large nature park make this Baltic Sea island an popular
travel destination.
Ruegen
Ruegen is the largest island in Germany and has the most beautiful
landscape on the Baltic Sea coast. Kilometre long sand beaches
draw thousands of holiday makers every year. The brilliant white
chalk cliffs of Ruegen are the symbol of the island.
Hiddensee
Hiddensee is reachable only by ship. This 17 km long and less than
one kilometre wide island of Hiddensee is auto-free. The only
means of transportation are bicycles and the famous horse and
carriages. Hiddensee has its own outstanding flora and fauna
as well as beautiful beaches and charming villages.
Stralsund
The glorious past of the “Town on the Water” is still
visible in the historic character of Stralsund. The majestic brick
churches of St. Nikolai and St. Jakobi tower above the old town
walls and houses. Stralsund, since 2002 a UNESCO-World Heritage
site, is a jewel with lovely ponds and parks surrounding the old
town. |
